Happy Flag Day

As you can tell by my blog’s design, I’m a big fan of the American flag. It’s the coolest flag out there as far as I’m concerned. Other countries have some pretty cool ones, too, like Britain’s Union Jack and Australia’s flag that also happens to include the Union Jack in its design.

Of course, there is so much more to our flag than just it’s cool design. It represents freedom, independence, self-reliance, unity, and liberty. Sadly, we are losing some of that right now with our new president, but hopefully we will get it back again.

Ed Morrissey has a video that I am going to link here. It’s of Rick Monday talking about what many consider to be the greatest play in baseball. On April 15, 1976, Rick Monday stopped two men from burning the American flag in the middle of a game in the outfield of Dodger Stadium. These two guy ran into the field, doused the flag in lighter fluid, and went to set it on fire when Monday ran in and grabbed the flag before they could burn it. It was a remarkable and emotional moment because at that time in 1976, Americans were feeling as if her best days were over. Watergate had just broken a few years earlier. The economy was in decline. Monday’s brave move affected Americans everywhere. Take a look:

Happy Flag Day. And don’t just fly Old Glory on this day. Fly her every day.

Update: Jules Crittenden at Forward Movement has many wonderful links and history.
